Dr Stephen Turner

Science Director, Office of Naval Research Global

Biography

Dr Stephen Turner has 30 years’ experience as a mechanical engineer. His home command is the Naval Undersea Warfare Centre in Newport, RI, and he is currently detailed to Office of Naval Research Global in Singapore. As a Science Director, Dr. Turner engages with academia and defence organizations in SE Asia and Australia to identify high calibre researchers and to promote research partnerships with the US Navy research enterprise.

During his career, Dr. Turner has focused on S&T relevant to underwater implosion, submarine weapon launching systems, effects of UNDEX on marine mammal lungs, torpedo engine isolation, and alternative torpedo fuels. Career highlights include off-site positions at (1) Pearl Harbor as Science & Technical Advisor to the Commander, Submarine Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC); (2) ONR 331 as Program Officer for Computational Mechanics and Enabling Capability Manager for the Underwater Implosion FNC program; and (3) Washington Navy Yard, Virginia Class Program as Weapon Systems Integration Team Lead for new construction issues.

Dr Turner earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from Michigan Technological University in 1992, a Master’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) from the University of Michigan in 1994, and Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from University of Rhode Island in 2003. He has published his research in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Journal of Heat Transfer, Journal of Applied Mechanics, and the Anatomical Record.
